Description
History of Gold Leaf --- In feudal times, Japanese gold leaf was produced mainly
in Kyoto as well as Tokyo, or Edo as it was called in those days, but in Japan it
is now manufactured only in Kanazawa city, thus called "Kanazawa Leaf" or "Kaga
Leaf"(Kaga is the old name of Kanazawa). The major reason for this fact is that
the climate of Kanazawa, especially its water, are suited for the production of
gold leaf, with the historical background that Kanazawa has long been one of the
greatest cities in Japan of applied fine arts. Although the metal leaf is a kind
of material for applied fine arts, it might be well called "applied fine arts"
itself owing to its manual prcduction process. There are four kinds of metal
leaves, viz. gold, silver, brass and aluminum leaves, each of which is being used
various different purposes. The production technique of gold leaf was supposedly
introduced into Japan from Asian continent together with Buddhism. The accurate
ongin of Japanese gold leaf is unknown, but it apparently dates back to a
considerably ancient time because a good deal of gold leaf is being used for many
time-honored Japanese temples like Byodoin founded by Yorimichi Fujiwara in 1035,
Chusonji Temple by Kiyohira Fujiwara in 1124 and Kinkakuji Temple (or Gold
Pavilion) by Yoshimitsu Ashikaga in 1393.
